Kane Vinson writes songs that follow you home.

The Dallas songwriter's debut solo EP, If & When, is four tracks of warm, hook-forward alt-R&B about boyhood, first crushes, and the ache of remembering when things were simpler. Lead single "How Far We've Come" premiered on KXT ahead of the July 18 release, an upbeat, breezy opener that sets the tone for the record. Listeners have drawn comparisons to Leon Bridges, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Michael Kiwanuka: voices that make sincerity sound effortless.

If & When is Vinson's first release under his own name after years fronting Dallas act Able Delilah, a band that played rooms across the metroplex including House of Blues Dallas, Deep Ellum Art Co., The Freeman, and Tulips in Fort Worth. When his creative partner stepped back to focus on fatherhood, Vinson took a handful of songs, some pulled from the drawer and some written fresh, into Element Sound Studio with producer Christopher "OZ" Billik, handling guitar and vocals himself while Billik and a rotating cast of session players filled out the arrangements.

The record doubles as a mission statement. Vinson, a first responder by day, writes openly about his struggles with depression and self-doubt, and he considers that openness part of the job. "Nice Guy" takes direct aim at toxic masculinity and the idea that asking for help makes a man weak. "I hope people find my music to be relatable and hard to get out of their heads," he says.

He's currently writing material that pushes further into social themes, drawing on the tradition of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On and a belief that soul music still has plenty to say beyond love songs.
